The marae at Utakura is known as Te Rangatahi O Utatewhanga Marae. The question of amalgamation of all marae committees to establish one marae for the rangatahi of Utatewhanga became the vocal point of discussion for many years dating back to 1972. At a gathering at Mataitaua Marae 31st March 1972 elders present decided that full authority be given to the younger generation to choose a place and site for the new marae.
